Are BMW 2002's rising in value or were they always this expensive?

My “one that got away” story is a ‘73 2002 that I almost picked up in 1999 for $1600. It wasn’t in as good shape as this one, but it was all there, with a full Korman suspension and everything. It seems that train has sailed...

They’ve gone up in value a lot over the past 2 or 3 years

I find that great condition classics go for a much higher price in Ontario because of the brutal winter conditions. This would probably be a much different price if we were looking in a European market or in the not-so-snowy parts of the US.

It’s funny, I had European friends and they all said BMW 2002s were crap cars, and they couldn’t understand why Americans liked them so much.

The main draw for Americans is that they’re quirky European cars which we don’t get a lot of over here. They were a budget car from BMW in order to build up their brand. A guy I used to work with bought one back in the early ‘70s because it was cheaper than the VW he was looking at, but it looked a lot nicer.
